Coffee in The Way

As I sat having coffee in The Way, I figured this is a brilliant place to go if your bike is being tuned up at Pedalworks, the excellent bike shop just over the road in West Street, Dunstable.  It could be you’re in the market for a new bicycle and feeling spoilt for choice and can’t make up your mind between the latest Sram or Shimano electronic gear changing kit.  This is the place to go to weigh things up as you make your choice.

Yep I’m still on the trail for the ideal coffee and, to be honest, I’m starting to question whether decaffeinated coffee will ever be a match for normal coffee with its natural caffeine still present.  This was brought home to me while I was in The Way and really enjoying a good coffee.  This is a place I know well.

So, the coffee.  Having tried a cup of decaffeinated coffee there, it was okay, no better or worse than anything else you’ll find in typical coffee shops.  The Way buys its coffee as roasted beans and then freshly grinds them for each cup; this brings the best possible flavour and aroma.  For the coffee connoisseur, the actual coffee is the Sumatra Liberty Jarvis coffee, supplied by the Indigo Valley Coffee Company.

And so, what does it taste like?

I can honestly say the Americano coffee I had there was the best coffee I’ve had.  It was rich, smooth, tasted and smelt superb.  This was the caffeinated coffee, which is freshly ground and brewed before your very eyes.  The “default” serving is a double shot, so feel free to mention you’d prefer a weaker brew if that’s what you fancy.  The decaffeinated version comes pre-ground and isn’t quite so nice.

Glynn, who runs The Way, also serves a range of scrummy cakes, pastries and snacks (I think these might be developing further over time).  There’s a nice quiet, relaxed atmosphere in The Way with an eclectic mixture of furniture to sit on, plus a couple of little “snug” areas which are tucked away behind the period brickwork. The whole building is, in fact, a tasteful blend between preserving the materials and character while bringing the facilities bang up to date.

The cost, pretty reasonable if you ask me – see below.  Cheaper and better than Costa. End of.
